Born Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo in Durban, South Africa, Black Coffee rose to international stardom as one of the most influential and visionary DJs and producers in contemporary electronic music. Growing up in the township of Umlazi, he pursued formal training in music at the Durban University of Technology. His career began with the release of his self-titled debut album in 2005, which quickly established him as a pioneer in fusing soulful house with rich, authentic African rhythms.
Despite overcoming personal adversity, including a life-changing accident that left him with the use of only one arm, Black Coffee’s unwavering determination propelled him forward. His subsequent albums, such as "Pieces of Me," "Home Brewed," and "Subconsciously," garnered critical acclaim and a global fanbase, featuring collaborations with prominent artists like Drake, Alicia Keys, and David Guetta. Renowned for his electrifying DJ performances, Black Coffee has graced some of the world’s most prestigious stages and festivals, including Coachella, Tomorrowland, and residencies at Ibiza’s top clubs.
In 2022, he made history as the first African DJ to win the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album for "Subconsciously." Beyond his production and DJ achievements, Black Coffee remains a trailblazer, using his platform to elevate South African music, nurture emerging talent, and advocate for cultural unity within the global music scene.
