Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1964 and raised in Belleville, Michigan, Kevin Saunderson emerged as one of the pioneering figures in Detroit techno. Alongside high school friends Juan Atkins and Derrick May, he is recognized as one of the "Belleville Three," the architects responsible for laying the genre’s foundation during the mid-1980s. Saunderson’s early fascination with electronic music, influenced by disco and funk, evolved into a groundbreaking sound that fused futuristic synths, driving rhythms, and an infectious energy.
Under the moniker Inner City, Saunderson achieved international acclaim with vocalist Paris Grey, producing chart-topping classics such as “Big Fun” and “Good Life”—tracks that bridged the gap between the burgeoning Detroit scene and the global mainstream. Beyond Inner City, Saunderson’s projects—Reese, E-Dancer, Tronikhouse—showcased his versatility and relentless drive to innovate within electronic music. Saunderson has released influential records on his own KMS label, providing a platform for both established and emerging artists.
Over decades, his work has not only shaped the sonic landscape of techno but also inspired generations of producers and DJs worldwide. Still active as a performer, producer, and mentor, Kevin Saunderson’s legacy stands as a testament to his creative vision and enduring impact on dance music culture.
