Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, Lerato Khathi—better known as Lakuti—has carved an influential path through global dance music as a DJ, label head, promoter, and activist. Her musical journey began with an early immersion in South Africa’s vibrant house and jazz scenes, before relocating to London in the late 1990s. There she co-founded the pioneering Sud Electronic label and event series, breaking new ground for deep house and techno.
Lakuti’s selections are widely celebrated for their warmth, eclecticism, and deep musical knowledge—blending soulful gems, deep house, and Afrocentric sounds, often spotlighting underrepresented voices. A staunch advocate for diversity and inclusion, Lakuti has continuously used her platforms to champion marginalized artists and champion social causes, whether through curation, panels, or collaborative projects. Currently based in Berlin, she manages Uzuri Recordings, which has released acclaimed works from artists such as Move D and Portable.
Lakuti’s charismatic performances have taken her to clubs and festivals across the world, from Panorama Bar and Dekmantel to Sonar and Dimensions. Beyond the booth, she is a connector, mentor, and driving force for positive change within electronic music culture at large.
