Chris Reed, better known as Plastician, is a pioneering DJ, producer, and radio presenter from South London. Renowned for his versatility and innovation, he has played a formative role in the evolution of grime, dubstep, and UK bass music. Emerging in the early 2000s under the alias Plasticman, Reed was among the first wave of artists to blend grime’s raw lyricism with the sub-heavy, experimental sounds that came to define dubstep.
A regular fixture on London’s pirate radio circuit, Plastician became known for his genre-spanning sets and championing of new talent. His influential tastemaking caught the attention of BBC Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs, leading to regular appearances on the “Breezeblock” show and, eventually, his own flagship slot on Rinse FM—one of the UK’s most celebrated underground stations. Plastician’s reputation as an innovative selector is matched by his production work.
His early releases—such as “Venom / Shockwave” and “Cha / Pump Up The Jam”—helped push the boundaries of the UK sound. In 2007, he released his debut album, *Beg To Differ* on Terrorhythm Recordings, a label he founded which has since become a launchpad for forward-thinking electronic artists from around the world. Respected for his open-minded approach, Plastician has fostered collaborations with artists across genres, while maintaining residencies at iconic club nights like FWD>> and fabric.
His career has taken him across the globe, performing at major festivals and shaping the sound of contemporary electronic music through both his DJ sets and his ever-evolving record label. With over two decades in the scene, Plastician remains a driving force, continually influencing the direction of UK underground music and mentoring the next generation of producers and DJs.
