Dan Snaith, known professionally as Caribou, is a Canadian electronic musician, composer, and producer. Born in 1978 in Dundas, Ontario, Snaith first gained recognition under the moniker Manitoba, releasing his debut album *Start Breaking My Heart* in 2001. Following a legal dispute over the name, he adopted the Caribou alias in 2004 and released *The Milk of Human Kindness*.
Blending intricate electronic production with elements of psychedelic pop, krautrock, and dance music, Caribou has become renowned for his genre-blurring sound and immersive live performances. Caribou’s critically acclaimed 2010 album *Swim* marked a breakthrough, featuring the hit single “Odessa” and earning a spot on numerous year-end lists. The record was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize, a distinction repeated with subsequent releases.
In 2014, *Our Love* further elevated his profile, incorporating soulful vocals and lush instrumentation and receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. His 2020 album, *Suddenly*, showcased a more personal and eclectic approach, exploring themes of family and change. Beyond his solo project, Snaith also records under the alias Daphni, focusing on club-oriented dance music.
He holds a PhD in mathematics from Imperial College London, a testament to his analytical approach to music-making. Over the course of two decades, Caribou has built a dedicated global following, celebrated for his inventive soundscapes and genre-defying contributions to modern electronic music.
